Rival Massacre
In preparation for the rival basketball game against another local school, Rochester High School’s Student Council members have organized a Valentine’s Day Massacre. During lunch students will pay a dollar for two swings at a junk yard car, with the proceeds going to charity.

The junk car has been donated from a local junk yard that has agreed to remove all windows. Sledge hammers and hard hats have been purchased from a local hardware store. Also, the care will be spray painted with the colors and mascot of the rival school. For an extra dollar, a picture will be taken with the student wearing the hard hard and holding the sledge hammer. This will take place on Valentine’s Day in front of the school in the court yard during all three lunches.

A Night With The Stars
(Commonly known at Dondero as Oak Rock)
Each year the Dondero Student Senate puts on an event called Oak Rock. It is a combination of mock election and talent show. The committee starts by reviewing the list of categories like Accident Waiting to Happen (worst driver), Crest Kid (prettiest smile), Match Made in Heaven (cutest couple), and Above and Beyond (most involved staff member).

Senators are required to wear homecoming apparel to school the day of Oak Rock to promote, advertise and give information to prospective attendees. Those presenting an award, the night of must dress up as well. Two senators present each award. They are responsible for coming up with a creative skit pertaining to their category to entertain the audience. As the presenters read each nominee’s name their picture is projected up on the screen in our auditorium, but a wall could work just as well. Winners are presented with a special “something” to remember each award like a toothbrush for Crest Kid and spray paint them gold. Sometimes they are kind of messy but the winners appreciate the effort.

A good month before Oak Rock the committee chairs have auditions for the acts. We have had everything from musical acts, an interpretive dance, and stand-up comedy to the annual dance team’s performance. The acts are scheduled in between every other couple awards to spice things up. We pick two seniors to host Oak Rock, in the past they have always been senior senators but since then we have tried incorporating other students as well.

The evening is concluded with a slide show. In the collage of pictures, we try to show a variety of student groups, which serves as a nice way of remembering all of the events from the past year. We take pictures with our digital camera and put the show together on a computer (power point) and project it onto the screen in our auditorium.

The idea of having Oak Rock is to give recognition to a wide variety of the student body. Anyone can be nominated, freshmen to seniors, but they cannot be nominated more than twice.

Fun Night
This even is called Mariner Manias. They are fun nights complete with a dance, inflatable activities, karaoke, video and board games also with food and drink. About 75-80% of the student body comes to these regularly.

MORP Dance
2001 marked the first year we hosted a MORP dance. For those of you that don't know MORP is prom spelled backwords. It is therefore an informal dance that attracts all students and sets a very casual environment. We had this dance to boost school spirit. We made the ticket prices $2 for everyone and $1 for those that attend the basketball game. The dance started promptly right after the game. The main focus of the committee that was in charge of the event was advertising. We used every method we could to attract the student body. The night was great and fun for everyone. The pitfalls are that it will be dificult to attract the older portion of the student body. Our dance was composed of mostly freshman and sophomores. It is essential that you have the support of the Juniors and Seniors in order for the event to be a success.

Silly Competition
It was always fun for us to have two people (one dressed as a player from our school and another dressed as a player from our opponent's school) compete in some silly contest. (i.e. a crazy relay) Of course the one from your school wins and the opponent acts really dumb and uncoordinated.

Air Band
An air band is something that always works at our assemblies. A bunch of people get together and do an air choreographed routine to a song of their choice. They get dressed up and just go crazy. The most effective ones are when the guys do a medley involving boy band, Spice Girls, and songs to that effect. it's great and is always good for a laugh.

Taped to a Wall
At one of our pep rallies, we got a group of willing students to represent their class and tape themselves to the gym wall, and whoever stayed up the longest won. We used duct tape because it holds longer. Each class picked their lightest person to tape to the wall. Whoever is the smallest stayed up on the wall the longest. It's really fun and funny when they fall off the wall. If you do this, you have to make sure that the person is at least five inches from the floor. They can't be standing on the floor.

Guys' Pageant
Have a talent or beauty pageant for guys. Have events like dancing, leg contest, talent (their choice). We did this at our school and our student body really liked it. Have about five or so guys come up and compete. For a prize give them a crown and some candy or a gift certificate from a local restaurant. You could pick a few to judge or have the pageant one day and have the students vote next day. Fill in the Mr.______ award with the name of your school mascot.

Multiple Mascots
We have a house system -- six houses of about 250 students each who are part of nine different teacher advisor groups....in our infinite quest to find ways to get more kids involved we purchased six mascots to represent each of our houses...this is where we only had a vague idea about what we were doing but forged on into the fog. In over 20 years of STUCO advising I can tell you the idea of multiple mascots never once crossed my mind....let me tell you, the interaction between these six characters is unbelievable...for example, and this is really easy, they have a routine where, along with their escorts, they have a twist contest at half-time in a basketball game...they get partners from the crowd,,mom, dad, other students....the game policeman.....and they simply have a twist contest....it is simple, but you should see the crowd reaction. The crowd reaction to these six characters along with the other parts of the program are beyond our wildest imagination....

Bobbing for Barbi
Instead of bobbing for apples have participants bob for bits o' Barbie until they can put together the whole doll.

Sipping Soda
A team of four persons is given a two-liter bottle of pop. The bottle is place on the ground about twenty feet away. Each participant has a double straw (two straws taped together) and at a whistle one participant goes out to sip the soda. At the second whistle the first sipper quits and must return so the second participant can go for a soda. The first team to drain the bottle is the winner.

Fetch the Bone
One team member tosses a wrapped rawhide bone across the gym or a field area. A teammate (wearing knee pads) crawls on all fours to retrieve the bone. The bone is picked up in the mouth, carried back on all fours and dropped in a dog dish. This event needs one tosser and retriever dogs per team.

Skateboard Olympics
The students on my leadership team hosted Skateboard Olympics during lunch hour last year in the cafeteria. They were a hit! There was rowing (sitting on the skateboard using a short toilet plunger to paddle), Skiing (standing on the skateboard using two toilet plungers on broom handles to push yourself), and swimming (lying on your stomach on the skateboard using your hands to push yourself). Lots of fun and low cost. Could be spruced up by having color teams, other special accessories to make contestants look ridiculous, such as gloves and ski goggles, swimming caps and snorkeling masks, lifejackets.
