Possible Items Included in a Student
Council/Activity Adviser's Job Description

The following items were taken from a variety of resources. There is no particular order, and some may sound repetitive. This is simply a guide for you! Take the points that work for your school and use those. Adapt the others, create new ones if needed, or don’t use some at all. Each of the items on here is in general format and MASC/MAHS understand that each school operates under various policies and procedures. This is a starting point for you to create your own Job Description at your school. Use these items as tools, not as requirements.

Please note that some of these items apply more to a Student Activities’ Director who oversees ALL student groups, rather than a Student Council Adviser whose sole responsibility is Student Council. It all depends on the school system you are in!

  • Organize and monitor Student Government/Council
  • Attend and participate in workshops and seminars to help develop YOUR and YOUR STUDENTS’ leadership skills.
  • Supervise all student government activities.  Meet with President and other advisers to assign chairmen and committee members for each activity.
  • Meet with committees, and help develop a list of tasks to be completed, along with a list of deadline dates.
  • Act as chaperone/adviser to students attending seminars and workshops outside of school.
  • Assist students in applying for activity clearances through building principal well in advance!  Be sure to notify the council when they are approved/rejected if they are not notified directly.
  • Check all activity clearances and keep record of them, who filled them out, when they were turned in, etc.
  • Make sure all Purchase Orders are filled out properly, and have a sales receipt attached if necessary.  Make copies of them before you turn them in, just in case anything happens.
  • Meet regularly with the Student Council President to make sure you are well prepared for all upcoming events, meetings, and activities. Be sure to express your opinions to the President, and speak to him/her as an adult. Build a relationship with the student on a business level.
  • Supervise student elections.
  • Assist students and staff in the formation of new or special activities.
  • Plan and/or coordinate school assemblies within the prescribed guidelines.
  • Do not dominate the Council, their discussions, or their decisions.  They will learn from their mistakes, but only if you are willing to let them fail.  As long as they are not hurting themselves, others, or doing something that logically does not make sense – most activities should be acceptable, within reason.
  • Keep track of all members who volunteer for projects, hold them accountable for the positions they undertake. Make sure they show up and report anyone that fails to follow through.
  • As the student government activities are cleared for the master calendar, inform the publicity chairperson so that he/she has time to operate.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate signage for promoting events and activities.
  • Work with the inter-club chairman.  Sit in on the President’s meetings to make sure the clubs are following procedures.
  • Maintain a roster of all Student Activities clubs and organizations; assist in recruiting sponsors as needed for other clubs.
  • Establish and maintain contact with various community groups.
  • Help coordinate solicitation of community groups for school programs.
  • Identify school service projects for implementation.
  • Coordinate/supervise student participation in service projects.
  • Coordinate scheduling of school facilities for student activities, meetings, athletics, and community use.
  • Coordinate and assist groups with their high school dances.
  • Assist Class Advisers and other student group sponsors with their activities when needed and appropriate.
  • Preparation of (w/school principal) an all-school activities calendar, in cooperation with the athletic calendar.
  • Teach a Leadership Class.
  • Monitor charity fund-raising events.
