Social Events

Pep Rally
Contributed by Grosse Pointe South High School Student Council

Two events that are held traditionally at our school’s pep assembly are a pie eating contest and a tricycle relay. Each grade has their four officers compete in the relay and a teacher or student officiates. The officer must ride the relay to half court (our assemblies are in our gym) and come back. Generally, the senior officers always win and although cheating is discouraged, it usually occurs. It gives minor competition between the classes and is a fun filler activity for any pep rally.

The pie-eating contest is another fun event because it also is a competition between the classes. You usually have a representative from each grade and a teacher or administrator participate. One tip I have found in having the contest run smoothly is make the pies without crusts because there is a greater risk of choking and sometimes the event will last longer than necessary.

Student Recognition/Appreciation
Contributed by Grass Lake High School Student Council

Let's face it…every teenager somewhere loves the concept of the Drive In movies from back in the day! Why not bring it back, only make it a walk-in-movie? It's really easy!

Grass Lake Student Council sponsors a Walk-In-Movie every year around Halloween time. It holds the same concept only the movie is shown at the football field and projected onto a tarp spread across the goal post. Students can bring lawn chairs and blankets and pillows or whatever they need to be comfortable. We don't charge anything for admission, but we do offer concessions, which we charge for, but just enough to make a small profit. We usually play a Halloween movie, but you can really do anything you want. We usually have a strong turnout, but make sure if you sell concessions, that you have lot's of Hot Chocolate...because it really gets COLD!!

Sadie Hawkins Dance
Contributed by Lincoln Park High School Student Council

Want to raise some money while having fun? How about a Sadie Hawkins dance? At our school, we've tried out several dates for Sadie Hawkins, and we discovered that the best date is the weekend before Thanksgiving! By that time, Homecoming would've been long over with, and the students need another dance to enjoy. The key to having a great Sadie Hawkins is giving it a unique theme. For the last two Sadie Hawkins dances, our themes were "A Walk to Remember" and "By the Light of the Harvest Moon". Add complementary colors to the theme, a good theme song, a nice DJ, cheery decorations, a Polaroid picture area with a nice backdrop, and lots of advertising and you too can have a moneymaker fun dance. This year, the food drive was going on simultaneously as ticket sales for Sadie Hawkins, and so to make the dance and the food drive more successful, we had a special offer where if you brought in canned food to the dance, you would get $1 off your Sadie Hawkins ticket!

Senior Picnic

Over the past several years, our NHS chapter has established a few year-end traditions; one being our senior picnic hosted by the junior members of NHS.

We are fortunate to have an adviser, Mrs. Pontious, who lives on Sanford Lake, and willing to host the picnic for us. Mrs. Pontious provides the hamburgers and hotdogs and the junior members of the chapter provide the salads, desserts, and drinks. Mr. Pontious is our cook at the grill, and all the senior members have to do is show up. In addition to living on the lake, Mr. And Mrs. Pontious also have the tools for entertainment: pontoon for those who just want to “cruise” the lake, a ski aboat for those adventurous enough to let Mr. Pontious take them tubing or skiing, and even a jet ski. We’ve been lucky that the weather has been warm enough near the end of the school year (we usually hold this during the last week of school) that we can enjoy the fun on the water. In the event of rain, we have been known to resort to the Pontious’ basement and board games become a major part of the entertainment.

One requirement of all those who attend is to bring a wrapped item for a Chinese Auction. Items must be in good taste, and cannot be meant to embarrass or humiliate anyone – but can be humorous. This is usually a highlight of the day and gets lots of laughs from everyone.

This is a great way to say good bye to our senior members; and it allows the junior members to begin the leadership roles necessary for the following school year.

Organize an Exam Relief Party
This idea includes a relaxing yet fun post-exam party. Host it the night after the last set of exams. It lets kids let loose and have some much needed fun.

Sweetheart Dance
With Valentines Day around the corner, the Whittemore-Prescott High School Student Council decided to plan an event related to this infamous holiday. What could we do, though? The option of a "Love Lock-In" had crossed our minds, as did a "Love Day" where we would sell flowers. As good as these ideas are, we were certain the student body would demand something more. Thus, this February, The W.P.H.S. Student Council organized and carried out a "Sweetheart Dance" on Friday, February 8, 2002.

In order to make the dance memorable and monumental, the Council chose to have a professional DJ and photographer. The Council also set up the gym in a "love" scene with red, purple, and pink balloons and hearts. As if that were not enough, the Council also opted for a refreshment stand. There we sold juices, water, and cookies.

All in all, the dance was a gigantic success! It was loved by those who attended, enjoyed by those who planned, and remembered by those who came. It really was a special night to remember!"l

Christmas Carol
Every December we host the annual Christmas Carol. We bring in families from several area shelters to our school and put on a christmas party for them. The night begins with the entry and check in of the families. We provide pizza and pop for everyone that attends. We have many different christmas oriented activities going on all throughout the lunch room. Such activities include cookie making, gingerbread house building, letters to santa, crafts, pictures with santa, and dancing. We have a student DJ it and play christmas music throughout the night. Every kid that comes to the party receives a gift that is setup before the event by the shelter contact. We bring in other clubs to help us out like NHS which runs an activity and the choir which sings carols. It is a wonderful and spirited event.

Some pitfalls is that everyone has to be well informed and know what is going on. Without the proper setup and communication the event will be a complete disaster. Also, you need to form backup plans in the event that the families are unable to attend. The night we hosted it we had bad weather and only half the scheduled families showed up.

MORP Dance
2001 marked the first year we hosted a MORP dance. For those of you that don't know MORP is prom spelled backwords. It is therefore an informal dance that attracts all students and sets a very casual environment. We had this dance to boost school spirit. We made the ticket prices $2 for everyone and $1 for those that attend the basketball game. The dance started promptly right after the game. The main focus of the committee that was in charge of the event was advertising. We used every method we could to attract the student body. The night was great and fun for everyone. The pitfalls are that it will be dificult to attract the older portion of the student body. Our dance was composed of mostly freshman and sophomores. It is essential that you have the support of the Juniors and Seniors in order for the event to be a success.
